Athens Metro is one of the safest Metros in the world, since the systems of advanced technology installed in the Metro are operated by experienced and properly trained personnel. Safety in the Athens Metro is the outcome of careful design and planning, the introduction of all necessary measures, scrutinizing controls and a continuous evaluation process in view of implementing any corrective actions.

State-of-the-art technological systems, such as the Automatic Protection System (ATP), Fire-detection and Fire-fighting, Ventilation, Smoke Exhaust, CCTV, Supervision and Alarm, UPS, etc. ensure the maximum degree of safety for the passengers, the personnel and the equipment. More precisely:

  • The signaling system equipped with state-of-the-art software meets the most modern and stringent specifications, ensuring, thus, safety of the train movements under normal and emergency operating conditions.
  • The traction power supply system has been designed so that in the event of failure of one of the power supply systems, trains continue to run in an unhindered manner
  • The ventilation system equipped with a state-of-the-art software ensures a pleasant environment in the Metro Stations under normal operating conditions, while, in the event of smoke or fire, the Metro ventilation system ensures a safe escape route for both personnel and passengers through a fully automated process.
  • Passenger traffic in Stations is constantly monitored and evaluated through the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) System, so that corrective actions may be implemented in the future for optimizing the services offered to the passengers

Announcements to the public are made in real time to prevent passenger accidents, damage to technical equipment, to inform the passengers regarding the traffic of trains or the persons with special needs regarding the operation of lifts.

The daily operation of the Metro is coordinated by the Operations Control Centre (OCC), which is open 24 hours/day on an annual basis. Thanks to the ultra-modern equipment installed in the OCC, OCC staff is informed in real-time on the system of the two Metro Lines. All individual technical systems installed (signaling, power supply, ventilation, announcements, building administration, etc.) are supervised and remotely controlled by the OCC, while double and triple redundancy is ensured for every subsystem on a local level.
